In the earlier version, Windows used to back up registry settings to the RegBack folder. However, Windows 10, version 1803 no longer automatically creates the registry backup, because it wants to reduce the overall disk footprint size of Windows. If you navigate to the \Windows\System32\config\RegBack folder, you will find the folder empty. But there are ways by which you can restore the previous registry settings to get rid of the corrupted registry and avoid further damage. Go through the methods given below and see which one works for you best.
Method 1: Manually Restore Registry
To manually restore the registry, you have to take the help of the registry editor. Remember even minor changes in the registry editor can create major problems. So, be cautious while going through the steps.
- Press Windows key +R.
- Type “regedit” and press OK.
- Open the Registry Editor.
- Then, go to the following location.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Configuration Manager\
- Now, right-click on the Configuration Manager
- Click on “New“
- Then, choose the “DWORD (32-bit) Value” option.
- You have to name this registry value. Choose a name like “EnablePeriodicBackup.”
- Now, set the value of EnablePeriodicBackup folder to 1.
- Leave the Registry Editor window and then restart your system.
- Your computer will create the registry backup.
Method 2: Restore Registry with Command Prompt
Manually using the registry editor can be too risky. If you don’t want to interfere with the registry editor, there’s another method for you. You only need to boot your computer in Safe Mode and then take the help of Command Prompt. Here’s a quick guide for you on how to restore the registry with Command Prompt.
- Press Windows key+I.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security and click on the Recovery option.
- Then, choose Advanced startup and click on “Restart.”
- After your system reboots, click on the Troubleshoot option.
- Select “Advanced options.”
- Then, click on the Command Prompt option
- The Command Prompt will start on X:\Windows\System32. Generally, operating systems are installed on C : . But after you boot your computer to the recovery mode, the drive letter changes to “D.”
- So, in this step, you have to move to the drive letter where Windows is installed.
- To do that you have to type the following command in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.
d:\
- Again type a command to confirm you are in the right drive and press Enter.
dir
- If you find the drive letter was incorrect, go back and type another drive letter in the command prompt.
- Now, type the following command to go to the System32 folder.
cd d:\windows\system32
(Considering “D” was the correct drive letter.)
- Press Enter.
- Next, type the following command to create a backup folder called configBak. Then, press “Enter.”
mkdir configBak
- You have to back up the config folder. Type the following commands and press Enter.
copy config configBak
- Type the following command to move inside the RegBack folder, which contains the backup of the registry. Then, press Enter.
cd config\RegBack

Verify the content on the RegBack folder by typing the command line and pressing Enter.
To copy the content on the RegBack folder type the following commands and press Enter.
copy ...
- Then, to confirm every operation, press “Y” and “Enter.”
- Next, close the Command Prompt window so that the backup folder will generate.
Method 3: Restore Registry using Task Scheduler
If the command prompt method seems tricky for you, then don’t worry. We have another easy method for you. Follow the steps below.
- Go to the Start Menu.
- Type “Task Scheduler” in the search bar.
- After you open the Task Scheduler, navigate to this path- Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Registry
- Now, right-click on the RegIdleBackup option.
- Select “Run“
- Now, the procedure will overwrite any previous backups in the RegBack folder.
Method 4: Third-party Software
